In a small, peaceful town in Oregon, surrounded by tall pine forests and crystal-clear rivers, there lived a young man named Ethan Carter. Ethan was known throughout the town not for his wealth, but for his honesty and kind heart.
He lived in a modest wooden cabin with his elderly mother, Margaret. Life had never been easy for them. After his father passed away years ago, Ethan became the sole provider for the family. His father’s last words had always stayed with him: “No matter how hard life gets, never lose your honesty.”
Every morning before sunrise, Ethan would grab his old axe and walk into the forest. The forest was dense, filled with towering trees and the sound of birds echoing through the valley. He worked tirelessly, cutting wood and carrying heavy bundles back to town to sell.

Ethan, surprised but respectful, replied honestly, “Ma’am, my axe fell into the river. It’s the only way I earn a living. Without it, I don’t know how I will take care of my mother.”
The woman nodded and disappeared into the water. Moments later, she rose again, holding a shining golden axe.
“Is this yours?” she asked.
Ethan looked at it carefully. It was beautiful, worth far more than anything he had ever owned. But he shook his head.
“No, ma’am. That’s not mine.”
The woman smiled slightly and disappeared again. This time, she returned with a silver axe.
“What about this one?”
Ethan again replied, “No, that’s not mine either.”
Finally, she brought out a simple iron axe—the same old tool Ethan had been using for years.
His eyes lit up.
“Yes! That’s mine!”
The woman stepped closer and said, “Your honesty has proven your character. Most people would have chosen the gold without hesitation.”
She handed him all three axes.
“Take them as a reward for your truthfulness.”
Ethan was speechless. “I… I don’t know what to say. Thank you.”
That day changed his life. With the golden axe, Ethan was able to sell it and invest in better tools and expand his work. Over time, he started a small lumber business. His honesty earned him trust, and trust brought him success.
Years passed, and Ethan became one of the most respected people in town. But despite his success, he never forgot where he came from.
He helped the poor, supported local families, and always reminded others about the importance of honesty.
One evening, as he sat outside his now larger home with his mother, she smiled and said, “Your father would be proud of you.”
Ethan looked at the sunset and replied softly, “Everything I have is because I chose honesty.”
